About Danville Public Works

The Public Works Department is composed of four divisions: streets, signs & signals, trees, and fleet maintenance. Each of these divisions are maintained as needed, depending on the season. Position Overview

This position works to assist all aspects of the department to ensure safety through the transportation infrastructure. Some aspects are maintained as needed, such as trees, snow removal, and pavement markings. The functional aspects of the job require operation of light and heavy equipment, any additional licenses and certifications can be discussed as needed. The use of materials such as asphalt, crack sealing material, pavement marking paint, chloride materials, and various fuels is also required for the completion of tasks.

A Day in the Life

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Using excellent customer service skills to work with the public
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with other employees and officials
  • Operation of various motorized light equipment and hand tools
  • Operation of various heavy equipment including backhoes, excavators, and farm tractors
  • Works in an outdoor setting on a regular basis, resulting in being subject to weather conditions
  • Exposure to loud and/or vibrating equipment while using provided personal protective equipment
  • Operation of single and tandem axle dump trucks in standard set-up and equipped with snow removal attachments
  • Using various materials and chemicals to complete DPW tasks

What You’ll Need for Success

You must meet the following requirements to be considered for employment:

  • A minimum of a high school diploma or GED equivalent
  • One year of experience in a construction-related field, or an equivalent construction vocational course, or a combination of both.
  • Valid Indiana Class B with Airbrake Endorsement (or the ability to obtain within 90 days of employment) with acceptable driving record for the past three (3) years
  • Must have a working telephone and be willing to be on a rotating 24-hour on-call list, with occasionally being on mandatory 24-hour on-call (primarily during winter and inclement weather events)
  • Must reside within a 30-minute response time radius from 1010 E. Broadway St., Danville, IN.
  • Must have the ability to establish a good working relationship with coworkers, supervisors, other department employees, and the public
