Danville Social District- What Businesses Need to Know

What Is the Danville Social District?
The Danville Social District is the Town of Danville’s Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area (DORA). It allows patrons 21 years of age and older to purchase alcoholic beverages from approved participating businesses and carry them outdoors for consumption within the posted Social District boundaries.
Who Can Participate?
To participate, a business must:

Hold a valid Indiana Alcohol & Tobacco Commission (ATC) alcoholic beverage permit

Be located within the approved Social District boundaries

Receive Town of Danville approval to participate in the Social District
What Participating Businesses May Do:
Approved participating businesses may:

Sell beer, wine, and/or liquor, consistent with their ATC permit
-
Serve alcoholic beverages in cups with an official DORA sticker
-
Allow patrons to exit their premises into the Social District with up to two (2) open alcoholic beverages

Serve alcohol on patios without fencing, unless otherwise required by law
What Participating Businesses Must Do:

Serve all DORA beverages only in cups with an official DORA sticker

Prevent glass containers or personal to-go containers from leaving the premises

Monitor patrons to ensure beverages remain within Social District boundaries

Follow all ATC rules and State of Indiana laws

Post Town-provided signage or decals indicating whether alcoholic beverages are permitted in or out of the business
Alcoholic Beverage Limits and Consumption:
Alcoholic beverages purchased from a Designated Permittee or Vendor within the Danville Social District:

May be consumed only within Social District boundaries

Must be served in a cup with an official DORA sticker
The maximum allowable amount per beverage is:

Beer or flavored malt beverages: up to 16 ounces
-
Wine, cider, or premixed cocktails: up to 12 ounces
-
Liquor or liquor-based cocktails: up to 10 ounces, including no more than 2 ounces of liquor
What Businesses May Prohibit:

Participation in the Social District is optional

Any business, participating or not, may, on a non-discriminatory basis, prohibit patrons from entering with alcoholic beverages

Businesses should clearly communicate this through posted signage
Hours of Operation:
The Danville Social District is in effect:
Monday – Sunday | 11:00 AM – 1:00 AM
Alcohol may not be sold or consumed outdoors under the Social District outside these hours.
Container Rules:

Cups must have an official Social District (DORA) sticker.

No glass containers

No outside alcohol
-
Any open alcoholic beverage purchased within the Social District must remain within the district
How to Apply to Participate:
Alcoholic beverage permittees located within the Social District must complete:

The completed form must be submitted to the Town of Danville for approval prior to filing with the Indiana Alcohol & Tobacco Commission.
Food trucks and temporary vendors wishing to sell alcohol must:

Hold a valid ATC alcoholic beverage permit

Obtain Town approval prior to ATC submission
DORA Stickers for Labeling Cups:
Participating businesses and temporary vendors that have submitted all required documentation must coordinate with the Community Engagement Coordinator to obtain approved Social District stickers for use on cups. Temporary vendors must indicate the number of stickers requested on the Temporary Vendor Application. Any unused stickers must be returned to Town Hall or to a participating local business.
Important Legal Reminder:
All applicable State of Indiana laws remain in effect, including laws related to underage drinking, public intoxication, impaired driving, and open containers.
Relevant statutes include IC 7.1-5-1-3 and IC 9-30-15-3.
